DFB ACADEMY & HEADQUARTERS

Frankfurt, Germany | 2015

The new home of the DFB has been conceived in the form of a contemporary acropolis; an efficient yet iconic precinct marrying landscape and buildings; dedicated to the future success and past victories of the German National Team. Approaching this complex from the direction of Kennedy Alee the ground peels up from the surrounding landscape forming a gentle rise. At the base of the rise, carved into the slope, is the central lobby connecting to all the buildings in the complex; its pyramidal skylight marking the center of the axis. Beyond the lobby the sloping green rises and is surmounted by three bar buildings forming an open U–shaped courtyard. To the right is the administration bar dedicated to the executive functions of the German team. This building brackets the court and both frames and contains the public space. To the left is the Academy building a school for the national team. The Academy bar floats on three supports two of which are green mounds–cut so as to allow the free flow of the public from the central court to an adjoining elevated terrace commemorating 125 years of the DFB’s existence: the ‘Field of Victory’. 125 stellae commemorating the teams and world cup events are arranged about a spiraling path leading the visitor slowly outwards towards a special precinct at the corner of the plaza overlooking the field of play. Here present day teams and victories can be celebrated on a raised podium against a backdrop of sky.
