WHO Headquarters Building Extension

Geneva, Switzerland | 2014

The durability and universality of the social, political, and formal principles underlining Jean Tschumi’s opus are what motivate our proposal for the WHO Headquarters Extension. The fundamental elements of the architectural ensemble he defined for the Headquarters are the fundamental elements of the new addition as well: Bar, Socle, Courtyard and Object. Our task was to complete the ensemble so that functionally the addition would enhance the uses of the existing building while at the same time developing new architectural logics for each of the new object types we design. Doubling & Inversion: the unique late modernist architecture of the existing WHO buildings are in themselves a sophisticated reinterpretation of early modernist principles. Our proposal in turn builds on Tschumi’s logics through a process of selective translation and inversion.
